Subud welcomes people of all faiths, or none. At its heart is the "latihan", an inner practice experienced rather than taught, that fosters personal growth and deepens one's awareness of the divine.

 

In the latihan, one lets go of attention and self-control and moves toward a surrender to something experienced as being greater. Many understand this to be God, the Almighty, or Highest Power. The latihan is a reorientation away from the control of the ego and toward guidance from beyond the self. ​During the latihan, one comes to feel the connection to the Almighty.

The latihan is not practiced to make life better, yet life often becomes better because it places a person in the right relationship with God, as one understands God. People who do the latihan regularly find that they are guided from within in their daily lives, not by thinking, but by an inner feeling.

The  latihan is done in a safe, quiet group setting, men and women separately, but it is deeply personal and private. It requires no intermediaries or belief systems and is open to people of all backgrounds.  Practicing members of a religion often find the latihan leads to a deepening of their faith.
